A total of 16 of these Bo-Bo type locomotives were exported to Ceylon in 1981/2, they were constructed to 5 foot 6 inch gauge and were rated at 1000hp. The power plant specified was the GM 645 V8 Diesel engine.

There are currently 15 of the M7 class of locomotives on the SLR’s engine fleet. Major overhauls take place at the Ratmalana Workshops.

BRUSH TRACTION DRAWINGS:

24 works drawings of A3 print size were provided by Brush Traction.

These have been used to establish many of the sizes and dimensions of the engines. An Excel chart was also produced, input of full size to give a reduced data base of actual build / construction sizes in 7¼ inch scale of 1.5 inches to the foot.

I also took over 1200 pictures during my 2006 trip to Sri Lanka, many of these have been used to verify or otherwise the actual engine detail as currently in use. (Changes are often made to engines in light of operational use, these changes may be due to climate or needs of maintenance requirements).

Sunday, December 5, 1999

A freight train collided with a passenger train in Sri Lanka on Sunday, December 5 killing 1 person and injuring around 60. The accident occurred at 03:15 on the main Kandy line between Rambukkana and Kadigamuwa railway stations in the Kegalle district of Sri Lanka.
The freight train (hauled by an M7 – 803) ran into the rear of the Night Mail train from Badulla.
According to railway officials the brakes of the freight locomotive failed. It ran, out of control onto the mainline and into the back of the passenger train. A number of the freight vehicles were derailed including a guard’s van. It was in the guard’s van that the only death occurred. A railway employee, the freight’s head guard was killed when it fell onto its side. Twenty of the injured were detained in hospital.

This scene records the untimely demise of M7 locomotive number 803.

correction note:

A freight train ran into the rear of the Night Mail train from Badulla. According to railway officials the brakes of the (M7) freight locomotive failed. It ran out of control down the hill, onto the mainline and collided with the Guards van of a passenger train at rest in the station.

My grateful thanks to the staff at Brush for the help and assistance with my quest and M7 project.

MY OWN SKETCHES & DRAWINGS:

I needed to make lots of sketches to show model detail, however using the pictures taken to show this as what happens in real practice is that things get changed on the shop floor and this /these changes can slip through the net and not get changed on the “as fitted” drawings. These have been used to establish many of the sizes and dimensions of the engines. I have

probably produced over 50 sketches and drawings to facilitate the build.

The actual build / construction sizes are to 7¼ inch scale of 1.5 inches to the foot.

Finishing and Painting.

Humbrol Ltd enamel paints for modellers were originally selected for use on this model. The colour examples are only for reference and do not depict the actual colours. Due to the quantity of paint needed the best option was to use 120ml tinlets as available fromwww.modelsforsale.com

The 2010 refurbishment and repaint uses RAL series colours.

The Grey gloss used is 120ml gloss white with 2 to 3 spoons of gloss black added, a self mixing of paint to acquire enough paint for the task to cover the area painted.

Drawing AO3009460 shows a side view of this engine plus the standards specified for finishing the paintwork. After a number of years in service things do change and so perhaps do the colours or shades of the colours according to what is perhaps locally available.

I noticed that SLR changed the red and green paint colours on the M7’s using local manufactured paint (the old colours were to either BS4800 or RAL colour standards)

The lower body was Leaf Green RAL 6002, the new green is a much brighter green.

The waistline chevron was Canary Yellow BS381C no. 309, the new colour looks very similar.

The upper body was Oxide Red RAL3009, the new colour is a much brighter red.

I colour matched using RAL charts to the photographs that were taken, as Humbrol paints ceased production of the larger 120ml tins. In any case how many people in England will have actually seen the real engines and be able to say “err,, that’s not right”! I think that another M7 like my model of this engine is under construction having provided information to another model engineer in East Anglia but have had no update on this.

Ifthar Rizvi included this construction project into his SL rail fans web site so that interested persons could see it being made from scratch. Progress was slow although I did have the works drawings plus all of my pictures to look at.

The actual model is about 75 inches long x 15 inches wide x 20 inches high.

Brush Electrical Machines Ltd of Loughborough is shown on my drawings (traction division), they were then a part of the Hawker Siddeley Group

So they were made by BRUSH. in 1981/2. if given any other references that would be wrong.

I have visited Brush works at Loughborough and hope do so again. The Engineer at Brush has driven this engine during a visit to the Ruddington Heritage Museum and home of the Nottingham Model & Experimental Engineers since completion and becoming fully operational.

Each outing to a Club track adds perhaps 5 to 20 actual miles to the engines operating log book, it has probably covered some 750 actual track miles since October 2007.
